TESS HOWELL

Full Biography:

Tess Howell is an extremely experienced arts producer, educator, business consultant, mentor and 5 Rhythms dance teacher. She has an extensive career history in the dance and the arts, both in the UK and overseas. Tess has led on the design of the arts education strategy for several major dance organisations, including developing major partnership programmes with Royal Holloway University, Sussex Downs College and Brighton Dome. Tess also works as a Freelance Consultant and Business Manager for a host of arts and cultural organisations. Tess is a 5 Rhythms teacher and leads “Waves On The Beach” and "Wild Grace" sessions using silent disco headsets to facilitate 5 Rhythms dance classes outdoors in spectacular settings. In 2012 she secured her own Arts Council funding to design and deliver a project bringing technology and dance together to get people dancing and developing community in exceptional outdoor spaces. Tess has been General Manager of a variety of highly successful Arts Council England "National Portfolio" dance organisations. Between 2011 and 2013 Tess was General Manager of Vincent Dance Theatre during the creation and touring of the internationally acclaimed “Motherland” show and whilst the VDT developed “The Table” website -a public resource for supporting artistic practice. Tess also co-delivered “VDT Produces” which specialised in supporting the professional development and creative work of early career artists. Tess was Company Manager and education lead at Jasmin Vardimon Company from 2006 to 2010 during the creation and touring of internationally acclaimed shows “Justitia”, and “Yesterday”. Tess is currently enjoying working as Producer with the highly successful Lost Dog dance company, supporting the wonder-filled show "Paradise Lost (lies unopened besides me)". Tess has a BSc in Psychology and a Postgraduate Diploma in “The Use of the Arts in Therapeutic and Educational settings”. She has offered sessions in using the arts for personal and professional growth work for over 7 years. Tess also designed and co-led a year long intensive women’s creativity and non denominational ceremony group. She has 7 years experience at long term youth mentoring within the cultural sector. Tess worked as Facilitator on the year long "Embodied Facilitators" international train the trainer programme from Integration Training which focuses on using the body to develop effective leadership within a business context. Tess trained as community arts practitioner with Same Sky in 2004. Over the last decade she has designed and developed many community arts initiatives both in the UK and in the USA, including delivering several projects at Kalani Arts Centre, Hawaii. She is also an established visual artist, whom has been widely exhibited across Europe, including being commissioned for the centre piece for the “13 Women” Exhibition in 2013. Tess is an articulate writer and has been published in the Embodiment Journal and Earthpathways. Tess studies the “Surfing the Creative” maps of movement based rites of passage from Melissa Michaels in the USA, which has been a major influence on this programme. Melissa mentors Tess in the development of her work in this area. In 2015 she was awarded a travel bursary from the Lisa Ullman Travelling Scholarship Fund to travel to Boulder, Colorado to study dance based rites of passage and support the set up of this work within in the UK. In 2012 Tess won the Linbury Trust bursary for her work in dance production to undertake the two week residential intensive Clore Arts leadership course for up and coming cultural leaders. In 2015 she became a Fellow at the RSA, London for her work using dance and the arts for leadership develoment.
